Amanda Grae Platner is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.

As a person living with Multiple Sclerosis, I experience firsthand how superficial labels and false assumptions prevent me from being accurately perceived. These experiences have heightened my awareness of how we often do not see each other as complex beings navigating the world in our own unique ways. Although MS is the main impetus for my observations, I’m investigating empathy through my studio practice. The self is a complex and multifaceted entity that develops through experiences that shape who we are and who we will become. To truly understand another person, we must acknowledge that person’s experiences without relying on assumptions based on our own. I share myself and my experiences through my work, hoping to combat assumptions not just of people with disabilities but of everyone. My work encompasses various paint styles, performances, interactive toy paintings, sculptures, installations, and video work. The myriad of ways MS can play havoc within my body has influenced the various ways I play within my work. That is, my disease has shaped my subject matter and formal strategies, not just in how I represent something but in how representation has become a mode of action and even interaction for me.
